English 9 Class Overview & Details
Welcome to High School English! During the first quarter, we'll spend quite a bit of time developing your critical thinking skills as we converse, read, and write. To be successful in high school English, it's absolutely imperative that you ACTIVELY participate in class. Active participation means that you're both willing to listen, and converse, productively.
You don't have to love reading to excel in English...in fact, when most people think about English class, they think about reading archaic novels written hundreds of years ago. This is not what high school English looks like today! Yes, we may read a novel or two, but much of what we read will include nonfiction (Sports Illustrated, Time, US Weekly, Teen...yes, this is reading) as well as reading music, art, images, and film. You'll have daily opportunities to voice and share your opinions as we read and analyze contemporary fiction and nonfiction. I need you, my students, to be active participants in class; I need you to choose to grow and challenge yourself. We'll work hard, but at the same time, we'll have fun!
